Triple Learning Platform: Learning Outcomes for Retail

As a part of the Triple Learning Platform (TLP) Leonardo da Vinci Partnership project, partners in four European countries (DE, DK, FI, NL) established an in-house retail business (retail shop), operating in collaboration with local retail businesses with a view to selling the products of these companies in the school environment. Primarily, the shops operated as a pedagogical tool, providing students with an authentic work-based learning environment and a means of creating closer links with the local business community. Whilst the retail model differed from country-to-country (location, earning principle, product range, etc.), a common set of learning-oriented tasks was developed, by partners, each presented in the form of Learning Outcomes that describe that targeted learning in terms of knowledge, skills and competences. Common Learning Outcomes centred on: store sales and services; customer service; visual merchandising; consumer advice; and marketing/communication. For each of the described Learning Outcomes, bespoke assessment criteria were also developed.
Needs, Context and Use
Having been developed to meet specific learning delivery needs in the participating institutions, the resultant Learning Outcomes are easily able to be transferred for use in other learning scenarios and environments, notably for those targeting learning or learning delivery in the retail sector. Materials can be used as an off-the-shelf product for those delivering similar projects or activities, in VET, but might also support those embarking on curriculum development or modernisation activity. Whilst the original project did not directly involve companies in learning delivery, or learner assessment, the developed Learning Outcomes show clear potential for use in the delivery of workplace learning. In some cases, the concepts of learning outcomes and learner assessment might need to be explained prior to embarking on delivery. In other cases, there might be a need to adapt the developed Learning Outcomes to reflect a specific working environment or retail sub-sector.
